Read Revelation Chapter 13, this is all leading up to that. Yes it's symbolic The beast is a man like Hitler, The sea is masses of people for example. According to Jesus himself, the last 7 seven years will be the worst time in the history of the world and there will never be a time like it again. It will be so bad that if God does not shorten it, no flesh would be left alive. Yes I know many think the Bible is just some old antiquated fairytale, but I assure you, you are mistaken.
